Carpet-Burns on Company History

Carpet-Burns was formed in 2002 by Applied Artist Kelly Atkins to specialize in the design, development and manufacture of sustainable materials and products. Whilst studying for a BA Honors in Applied Arts, Atkins had what is now known as her “light bulb moment” while ironing on a carpeted bedroom floor, accidentally leaving a hard plastic surface. This led to a three year material research project in which Kelly wanted to prove that a throwaway item, which would usually go directly to landfill, could instead be turned it into a new product which was fun, functional and had a long second life. Like many great eureka moments, the idea for Carpet-Burns came by accident, but the success that followed, including being recently short-listed alongside Jamie Oliver for the New Statesman Upstart Awards, has been by design.
Experimenting on other carpet pieces, Kelly soon realized her invention's enormous potential as a green material for design and construction industries. It wasn't long before she had the European patent for HTC, or Heat Treated Carpet, a sustainable product achieved through a recycling process that requires no separation or shredding, and no stabilizers, glues or resins. Just heat and pressure applied to faulty or end-of-line carpet stock
